How do STDs spread?

According to the American Sexual Health Association, one in two sexually active persons will contract an STD by age 25. STDs can spread through sexual contact with an infected partner. This could be merely skin-to-skin contact, or through oral, anal or vaginal sex. Because many STDs don’t show symptoms, they are easily spread when an individual doesn’t know that he or she is infected.

Common STDs

There are many types of STDs, some of which are treatable and some that are not. Below, you will find a list of the most common STDs. The ones noted with an asterisk* are ones that do not yet have a cure. For those STDs that are incurable, there are certain medications and treatments to manage the side effects.

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus)*
  • Syphilis
  • HIV/AIDS*
  • Herpes*
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Hepatitis*
  • Bacterial Vaginosis
  • Crabs/Pubic Lice

Common STD Symptoms

As mentioned above, it’s important to realize that not all STDs show symptoms as first or at all. But, that doesn’t mean it isn’t doing damage to your body. In the case that you are exhibiting certain symptoms, you may experience some of the following physical ailments:

  • No symptoms, especially in women
  • Bumps, sores, or warts near the mouth or genital area
  • Swelling or redness around the genitals
  • Painful urination
  • Unusual discharge
  • Vaginal bleeding outside of your monthly period
  • Painful intercourse

If any of these symptoms apply to you, it’s time to get tested. Leaving an STD untreated can cause extreme harm to your body, especially if you have contracted an STD that isn’t curable. Contact Aspire Together today for free STD testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea and get your results back within 1 week. If we believe you may need additional tests, we can refer you to the nearest health clinic.
