How do I know if I’m pregnant?

After having unprotected sex or experiencing birth control failure, you might be wondering whether you’re pregnant. During the early stages of pregnancy, your body can exhibit certain signs or symptoms that may indicate pregnancy. The most common sign is a missed period. However, there are other symptoms that may come along with a missed period, such as:

  • Nausea/morning sickness
  • Swollen and tender breasts
  • Spotting/implantation bleeding
  • Food cravings
  • Frequent urination
  • Headaches
  • Backaches
  • Cramping

In fact, a small percentage of women still have their period while pregnant. That is why it’s so important to take a pregnancy test to know for sure.

When should I take a pregnancy test?

A pregnancy test is most accurate if taken one week after your missed period. The longer you wait to take the test, the more accurate the results will be due to the increased levels of hCG in your urine. This hCG hormone is the hormone present during pregnancy and doubles every 48 hours in a woman’s body after conception. If you take a pregnancy test too early, there may not be enough hCG in the urine for the test to detect – thus resulting in a false negative result.

If you have missed your period and are wondering whether now is the right time to take a pregnancy test, we are here to help. We offer pregnancy testing free of charge at our center and can help you discover when to come in for an appointment for the most accurate results. During your appointment, we will ensure that the test is administered correctly and will discuss your results with you immediately.
