Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?
If you are considering an abortion, you may have found that an ultrasound is a necessary step in the process. Whether you want one or not, it may not be completely clear to you why you need one – especially if you are planning an abortion. Ultrasounds are a vital step in your process, no matter what decision you make with your pregnancy

Ultrasounds will help you…

1. Determine health risks.

Before getting an abortion, you need to know if there will be any major threats to your

health. Getting an ultrasound can help medical staff know your risks – especially if you

have an ectopic pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancies occur when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. Most

commonly, it may implant in the fallopian tubes, but it could occur inside the ovaries,

abdominal cavity, or even the cervix. Continuing an ectopic pregnancy could be a fatal

mistake. The fetus cannot properly grow in a space not designed for it, and it could

seriously damage or harm the mother.

If you’re considering an abortion, you will need to know if your pregnancy is ectopic,

since there is a high risk of an incomplete abortion, and the pregnancy would continue to

pose serious health risks to you.

2. Confirm viability.

According to the Mayo Clinic, 10-20% of all pregnancies end in miscarriages. A viable

pregnancy means that a heartbeat is confirmed and the fetus’s health is sustainable. It is

necessary to confirm a viable pregnancy because if your pregnancy is not viable, you

will not need to undergo an abortion.

3. Determine how far along you are.

An ultrasound is also necessary to confirm how far along you are in your pregnancy, as

that may help you figure out which type of abortion you may have.

If you are under 10 weeks in your pregnancy, you may qualify for a medical abortion.

You can read more about that here. If you have already hit the 10-week mark, you will have to undergo a surgical abortion if you choose abortion.

4. Help you to make a fully-informed decision.

If you are considering an abortion, you need to be fully informed. Having an ultrasound will only help you make a better decision, as you will have more information about your health and your pregnancy.
