Benefits of an Ultrasound
If you have just found out you are pregnant, or believe you may be pregnant, you will want to know about the benefits of getting an ultrasound.
Confirming Your Pregnancy
When you first find out that you are expecting through a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is recommended to confirm your pregnancy. Since many early pregnancies end in miscarriage, it is important that you receive an ultrasound to see if you still have a viable pregnancy. A few weeks after your initial ultrasound, a follow-up ultrasound will confirm again.
Locating Your Pregnancy
This early ultrasound is also essential to determine if your pregnancy is located in the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies occur when the embryo develops outside the uterus, and it is important to diagnose these early for the mother’s safety.
Determining the Size and Number of Embryos
An early ultrasound can provide other important information about your pregnancy, such as the size of your embryo, or if there are multiple embryos.
Knowing Your Due Date
Many women are unsure of how far along they are in their pregnancy. By taking measurements, the sonographer is able to give you an expected due date.
Hearing the Heartbeat
As early as 5 or 6 weeks gestation, the heart starts beating. In many early ultrasounds, the sonographer is able to detect the heartbeat and let you listen to it.
