If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and are leaning toward adoption, we are here to provide you with resources and support. Adoption is a big decision to make, so it must be carefully considered along with your other options.
Here, you will find information on the types of adoption as well as adoption resources. If you have additional questions or want to learn more about adoption, please contact us today.
Types of Adoption
Adoption has changed over the years, allowing birth mothers more control over their situation and more options to choose from when it comes to adoption. There are several types of adoption that cater to how much contact you want with your child and his or her adoptive family as well as your personal privacy.
You can have an open adoption, which means you will receive information about the adoptive family before choosing them and will be able to stay in contact with your child after the adoption is complete.
A closed adoption keeps your information and the adoptive family’s information private and prevents contact with your child after the adoption is complete and until the child is 18 years of age.
You can also choose to work with an adoption agency or do an independent adoption, through the assistance of a lawyer. As you learn about each route you can take, you will be able to identify the best path for your unique situation.
Is Adoption Right for Me?
Choosing adoption can seem daunting, but with the right support and the proper knowledge, you can feel confident in your adoption decision. You may be considering adoption for the following reasons:
- “I don’t want to continue my pregnancy, but I don’t want to have an abortion.”
- “The father isn’t in the picture, and I don’t have the support to raise a child on my own.”
- “I don’t have the financial means to support my child.”
- “I want my child to go to a loving family that can take care of him or her.”
- “I want to finish school/continue my career without caring for a baby, too.”
- “I do not have a stable home life or living situation.”
- “I am not emotionally or mentally capable of caring for a child.”
- “I want my child to grow up in a better situation than I did.”
No matter why you choose adoption, your reasons are valid. Remember, this is your decision to make, so try your best to ignore any feelings of pressure from anyone in your life about this decision.
