Vitamin B6. Vitex. Or one of those “hormone-balancing” blends. Your friend swears by it. The reviews are glowing. But a month or two later, you’re wondering why you haven’t noticed much difference. **Here’s what I wish more women understood:** The supplement that helps your friend may not be what *your* body needs. Take DIM, for example. DIM is a compound that influences estrogen metabolism. It’s often marketed for symptoms associated with “estrogen dominance,” like breast tenderness, acne, and heavy periods. But those symptoms don’t automatically mean you have too much estrogen—or that DIM is the right solution. And what if your biggest struggle isn’t breast tenderness or acne? What if it’s the anxiety that shows up like clockwork before your period? Or the depression and irritability that seem to disappear within a few days of menstruation? Or the insomnia, bloating, and exhaustion that begin nearly two weeks before your period? **Those patterns tell us something important.** And they may require very different approaches. Here’s something that surprises many women: **Severe premenstrual mood symptoms aren’t always caused by a hormone deficiency or imbalance.** In women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), for example, the brain can be unusually sensitive to normal hormonal fluctuations. That means hormone levels may look perfectly normal on lab work, even when symptoms are significantly disrupting your life. And simply adding progesterone or another “hormone-balancing” supplement may not address what’s actually happening. This is why I spend so much time helping women understand their symptoms, their cycles, and the bigger picture of their health. Because **two women can have similar symptoms for very different reasons.** So before purchasing another supplement, I’d encourage you to ask yourself: *What symptoms am I actually trying to improve? And when, exactly, do they happen?* Start tracking your symptoms alongside your cycle for at least two months. Notice when they begin, when they’re most intense, and when they improve. And if they’re affecting your relationships, work, or ability to enjoy everyday life, don’t settle for being told it’s “just PMS.” You deserve a thoughtful evaluation and a plan that addresses your individual needs. **The goal isn’t to take more supplements.
